The Pantas Award seeks for outstanding scientists/researchers and research administrators, while the Tanglaw Award looks for laudable research institutions.

Producing healthy, high value crops at lesser cost will help farmers raise their income. One way is by tapping the potential of seaweeds as natural fertilizer. Seaweeds contain an additive called carrageenan. Earlier studies showed that carrageenan, when degraded or reduced into tiny sizes using irradiation technology, can promote growth in rice plants. It can also make plants resistant to pests and diseases.

Considered as the number one fruit crop by area and production in the country, bananas are planted in 443,370 hectares (ha) with 9.08 million metric tons production in 2015 based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. Of the total area planted to banana, 85,809 ha are used for Cavendish production mainly for export. Smart agricultural information systems and technologies will aid farmers, agricultural technicians, researchers, and policy makers in dealing with climate uncertainties.

“Magtanim ay di biro.” Ito ang katutubong awit na naglalarawan ng hirap ng pagtatanim ng palay. Ngunit ngayon, isang mekanikal na pangtanim ang magpapagaan sa trabaho ng magsasaka. Ito ay tinatawag na “local riding-type transplanter” na kung saan ang magsasaka ay maaring magtanim habang nakasakay sa makina.

Ang makina ay makapagtatanim ng dalawa hanggang anim na punla bawat tundos sa lalim na 2-6 sentimetro at distansyang 12-18 sentimetro sa pagitan ng bawat tundos. Ito ay may 30 sentimetrong

Maaring magamit ang ‘irradiated carrageenan’ mula sa pulang seaweed bilang ‘plant food supplement’ (PFS). Ang seaweeds ay may taglay na ‘additive’ na kung tawagin ay carrageenan. Nakita sa mga pag-aaral na kapag ang carrageenan ay isinailalim sa ‘irradiation,’ maaari itong magamit na ‘food supplement’ sa palay. Sa ilang mga ginawang pagsubok sa Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, at Iloilo, napataas ng ‘irradiated carrageenan’ ang ani ng palay mula 15% hanggang 40%.

An expedition to Apo Reef Natural Park conducted in March 2016 revealed greater reef biodiversity compared to previous surveys. To address the issue on quality and value of Philippine dried sea cucumbers, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) developed a package of technology for the postharvest processing of sea cucumber specifically, Holothuria scabra.

The technology produces Class A premium grade sea cucumber with reduced microbial content, improved shelf life, and no foul odor, thus commanding a higher market price.
