Collaboration for the improvement and sustainability of Zampen native chicken inked

The agreement is in connection with the project, Piloting a Profitable and Sustainable Commercial Scale Zampen Native Chicken Breeding Operation, which is funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

 

>The partnership was sealed during the first day of the celebration of the Zampen Native Chicken Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda (FIESTA) held from November 22 to 23, 2016 at KCC Mall de Zamboanga, Zamboanga City.

Under the partnership, JHCSC will provide the manpower to manage the breeder and slaughter native chickens; manage and provide the forage area and facilities for the native chicken; and submit monthly monitoring report to WMSU.

On the other hand, WMSU will equip JHCSC’s staff with knowledge and know-how on Zampen native chicken technology as well as pricing and marketing options through a series of trainings; provide inputs such as feeds, vaccines, medications, and other technical assistance and support services needed in the operation of the project; and assist in the marketing of live, dressed, and other native chicken products. WMSU, through SRPPF, will provide quality breeder and grower stocks to JHCSC.

The purified breed of Zampen native chicken yield more eggs annually compared to the Joloano native chicken and has lower mortality rate. It is one of the four purified native chicken strains developed in the project, which include Darag in Western Visayas, Camarines in Bicol, and Boholano in Bohol.

Implemented by WMSU, the project is a component of a native chicken program being supported by DOST-PCAARRD entitled Purification, Improvement and Sustainable Utilization of Native Chicken Strains in Bohol, Bicol and Zamboanga Peninsula. It adopts the technologies and protocol developed by WMSU on the management of the Joloano native chickens from hatching, day old, hardening, and up until the birds are ready for breeding; selecting and purifying the strain; and developing the health protocol and feeding management system.
