Three government projects on shrimp topped the scientific poster abstract competition during the 13th Philippine Shrimp Congress themed, “Philippine Shrimp Industry: Its Paradigm Shift to Sustainable New Normal” held last November 9-11, 2021 via video conference.
All three projects are funded or monitored by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).
One of its major highlights is the poster booth exhibit open to all researchers, academicians, and business practitioners. Several entries aligned with the four sub-themes: hatchery, marketing, culture, and government initiatives/interventions were submitted and evaluated.
The abstract, “Mitigating the Impacts of a Pandemic in Shrimp Aquaculture: Increasing Productivity Through Integration with Biofloc Technology during the Nursery Production in Tanks” by Dr. Christopher Marlowe A. Caipang of the University of San Agustin as the corresponding author, topped all abstracts submitted.
Dr. Caipang is the project leader of the DOST-PCAARRD-monitored shrimp project under the Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE) program funded by the DOST.
“Jamp Alert Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) Detection Kit: A promising Local Diagnostic Alternative” authored by Dr. Mary Beth B. Maningas of the University of Santo Tomas won 2nd place. Dr. Maningas is the project leader of the recently completed shrimp project, “Field testing of LAMP detection kit for AHPND in shrimps” funded by DOST-PCAARRD.
Lastly, the abstract titled, “Evaluating Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture as an Approach to Disease and Environmental Management for Sustainable Culture of Penaeus monodon in Northern Mindanao” won 3rd place during the competition. Ms. Elgen M. Arriesgado of the Mindanao State University-Naawan is the corresponding author and project leader of this ongoing DOST-PCAARRD-funded shrimp project.
This Congress was organized by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, in cooperation with Philippine Shrimp Industry, Inc. (PHILSHRIMP), DOST, Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative (NPPC), and National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI). This served as a virtual platform to exchange ideas, updates, strengthen networks, meet partners, open markets, and learn from people with a wide range of experience and expertise.
A total of 1,031 shrimp producers, exporters, experts, suppliers, students, researchers, and those from the government institutions in the Philippines attended the said event.
