DOST-PCAARRD trains researchers on health management for fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) recently conducted a training for researchers on health management of fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Held at the Roque Lab., Miguel de Benavides Bldg., University of Santo Tomas, España, Manila, the training Health Management for Fishes, Crustaceans and Mollusks, was organized by PCAARRD’s Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD) in coordination with the University of Santo Tomas - Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Science.

Researchers in fisheries/aquaculture from selected fisheries state colleges and universities of the National Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Network (NAARRDN) were trained on health management of fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks through the use of molecular detection tools.

The participants were also updated on the industry status and the Industry Strategic S&T programs (ISP) on inland aquatic resources sector.

Experts in the fisheries sector provided a series of lectures on the following topics:

• Industry Status and ISP for the Selected Inland Aquatic Resources by Dr. Dalisay DG. Fernandez, IARRD-PCAARRD Director
• Common Pathogens in Aquaculture: Bacteria by Dr. Rolando V. Pakingking, Jr. of SEAFDEC-AQD
• Immunostimulants in Boosting Immunity by Dr. Edgar C. Amar of SEAFDEC-AQD
• Molecular Detection Tools: PCR-Based and LAMP by Dr. Christopher M. Caipang of Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore
• Prevention Strategies: Biofloc and Greenwater Technology by Prof. Valeriano L. Corre Jr. of UP Visayas and Mr. Leovigildo Rey S. Alaban of Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College (NIPSC)
• Common Pathogens in Aquaculture: Viruses by Dr. Mary Beth B. Maningas of UST

The lecturers and DOST-PCAARRD ISP managers also trained the participants on research proposal preparation.

The 27 participants from 22 state universities and colleges (SUCs) included faculty members, research staff, and directors.

These colleges and universities included the University of the Philippines Visayas, Samar State University, University of San Carlos, Isabela State University, Romblon State University, Western Philippines University, Bicol University – Tabaco Campus, Visayas State University, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, Cavite State University, Marinduque State College, Laguna State Polytechnic University, University of Northern Philippines, Nueva Vizcaya State University, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Surigao State College of Technology, Pangasinan State University – Binmaley Campus, Mariano Marcos State University, Capiz State University, Davao del Norte State College, Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, and Southern Leyte State University.
