DOST-PCAARRD’s Lakbay GALING series wins at the 2024 Gandingan Awards

Lakbay GALÍNG’s episode on the production of smoked tilapia and ‘tilanggit’ for COVID-19 affected communities in Southern Isabela was hailed as the Most Development-Oriented Women’s Program during the 18th UP ComBroadSoc Gandingan Awards.

Lakbay GALÍNG is a YouTube series of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). It captures the different science and technology  (S&T) initiatives of the Good Agri-Aqua Livelihood Initiatives toward National Goals (GALÍNG)-PCAARRD program.

Themed “Agrikultura: Mga Kwento ng Hamon at Pag-asa,” this year’s Gandingan Awards spotlights stories reflecting the plight, struggles, and challenges of the country’s agricultural sector.

DOST-PCAARRD Deputy Executive Director for Administration, Resource Management and Support Services  Melvin B. Carlos and Applied Communication Division staffer Angeli May A. Marcon accepted the Most Development-Oriented Women’s Program Award during the 18th Gandingan Awards held last May 4, 2024, at Charles Fuller Baker Memorial Hall, University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The winning episode features a GALÍNG-PCAARRD Program project implemented by the team of Dr. Isagani P. Angeles, Jr. of Isabela State University (ISU). Monitored by the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD) of DOST-PCAARRD, the project provided science-based smoked tilapia and tilanggit production among housewives in selected municipalities of the province.

The episode, which can be viewed via the DOST-PCAARRD’s Official YouTube channel, highlights the importance of women and gender inclusivity in advancing the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources (AANR) sector.

Highlighting the impact of S&T on the lives of the people, DOST-PCAARRD’s Lakbay GALÍNG and Saribuhay series were also nominated in six other categories namely:

  • Most Development-Oriented Environment Program - Saribuhay Episode: Paano makakamit ang Sustainable and Responsible Tourism?;
  • Most Development-Oriented Livelihood Program - Lakbay GALÍNG Episode: Internet at agrikultura, pwede palang ipagsama!;
