Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat can now accept halal slaughtering services from its barangays and neighboring municipalities.
Recently, the National Meat Inspection Service awarded the License to Operate as a Double-A slaughtering facility to the Halal Slaughterhouse at Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU)-Lutayan. The facility has passed the minimum requirements on food safety based on Good Manufacturing Practices and is equipped with the appropriate equipment to turn slaughtered halal animals into quality and hygienic meat suitable for sale in any local or national market.
While the Halal Goat Science and Innovation Center at the SKSU-Lutayan Campus is currently applying for accreditation as a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) training and assessment facility, it can thus start to accommodate NC II enrollees for halal slaughtering, once the TESDA application is approved. This function of the center is an additional service other than its usual role as a halal slaughterhouse for the area. Now, it has already been used to train meat inspectors of region 12 through a partnership with NMIS and the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute Regional Office 12 (DA-ATI RO 12).
The construction of the halal slaughterhouse was started in 2018 under the funding support of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). On the other hand, the accreditation was completed under the Niche Centers in the Regions for R&D (NICER) under the funding support of DOST.
