Prospects of engineered bamboo explained

Ms. Lilian T. Valencia, Technology Application and Promotion Unit, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), explains the prospects of engineered bamboo during the Northern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium’s (NOMCAARRD) Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda (FIESTA) held at the Central Mindanao University, University Town, Musuan, Barangay Dologon, Maramag, Bukidnon. 

Bamboo has gone a long way in providing various livelihood opportunities. Engineered bamboo, as one of its most recent products, is used in many high-end homes, hotels, and offices around the world. A wide range of products from bamboo can be made by binding together bamboo veneers, strands, fibers, strips or slats, woven mats, or flattened bamboo with a suitable glue to form a composite material designed to meet specific needs. Engineered bamboo is often stronger and less prone to warping than equivalent solid woods. 

As part of its Industry Strategic S&T Program (ISP) for Bamboo, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) had some engagement with NOMCAARRD on bamboo. Among these were on the management of clumps of giant bamboo with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Research and Development (DENR) Region 10, the GIS-based assessment of bamboo resources and supply chain analysis, and soil erosion management at the Taganibong watershed, both with the CMU.
