Government officials and artists named as science and technology ambassadors

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently announced the names of what it considers as its science and technology (S&T) ambassadors during the Science Jam concert held at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) Gymnasium – Obrero Campus, Davao City.

The event was conducted in recognition of the efforts and contribution of selected personalities in the field of science, technology and innovation.

Among the ambassadors include Sen. Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Chair, Senate Committee on Youth; Rep. Mario U. Piamonte, Senior Vice Chair, Committee on Science and Technology of the House of Representatives; and Vice Governor Manuel E. Zamora of Compostella Valley.

Other designated S&T ambassadors include Davao City Councilors Maria Belen Acosta and Marissa Salvador Abella; and singer-song writers and environmental advocates Mr. Joey Ayala and Mr. Ronulfo “Popong”Landero.

Science jam is one of the activities under the DOST’s campaign dubbed as “Science Nation’s Tour” which aims to bring relevant S&T programs that will help boost the local regions’ economies.

In an earlier event, a Regional Development Council (RDC) XI meeting was conducted at the Public Safety and Security Command Center, Ecoland, Davao City. Dr. Feliciano G. Calora, Jr. of DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) provided the updates of the DOST programs and projects on agriculture. Ms. Jo Brianne Briones and DOST Assistant Secretary Raymund Liboro, presented the applications of projects NOAH and DREAM-LIDAR, respectively.

The “science and technology ambassadors” approach epitomizes DOST’s keen interest in tapping every possible opportunity in making known the government’s research and development (R&D) outputs and in achieving wider and dynamic community involvement in what it terms as participatory development.

DOST’s avowal of public service will once more take center stage as it celebrates this year’s National Science and Technology Week on July 24-28 at SMX Mall of Asia, Pasay City with Philippines: A Science Nation Innovating for Global Competitiveness as its theme.
