Dr. Rene C. Santiago, Head of the National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center, Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI-NSPRDC), presents the technology on Itik Pinas, which is an improvement of the Philippine Mallard Duck. This was during a forum held at the Philippine Trade and Training Center in Pasay City on the occasion of the 2017 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
The forum is part of the showcasing of the latest and most innovative products, know-how, and services, developed and funded by the Department of Science and Technology and its agencies. Guided by the goal of creating a venue for interaction among researchers, scientists and innovators, and the industry representatives, entrepreneurs, practicing professionals, educators, the 2017 NSTW adopts the theme “Science for the People.”
Itik Pinas, one of the topics in the forum, is also part of the technologies showcased in the “Food on the Table” Pavilion of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).
Santiago explains how Itik Pinas fares in terms of egg production compared with the old breed owing to its genetic superior quality. Itik Pinas higher average productive period of 70% in a year, compared with 55% of the old breed, translates to an increase in egg production of at least 55 quality eggs per duck per year. This gives an additional income of at least ₱300 per duck per year. Itik Pinas also produces eggs at an average of 65 grams a piece, consistent with the requirement of the ‘balut’ industry.
