LBSCFI celebrates 2011 NSTW

“Syensaya”, the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc.’s (LBSCFI) celebration of the  National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) will be held on July 28-30.

For the 2011 NSTW, LBSCFI adopts the theme “Nasa syensya ang pag-asa” of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

A science discovery exhibit, a techno forum, a research and development (R&D) awarding ceremony, and a launch of the science and technology (S&T)-based educational tour will highlight this year’s NSTW celebration of the LBSCFI.

Agham Partylist Representative Angelo B. Palmones will keynote the opening ceremonies on July 28 at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Baker Hall. Palmones will also take part in the opening of the exhibit dubbed as “Wonderama”, which is also at the UPLB Baker Hall.

The exhibit will showcase basic science principles, researches and experiments conducted by high school students, and the application of science and technology (S&T) in agricultural production, energy, and environment specifically in addressing climate change and other current issues and problems.

Also on July 28 is the launch of the S&T-based educational tour, which will be held at the Trace College in Barangay Batong Malake, Los Baños. A part of the educational tour is an interactive mobile science exhibit in modular form aptly called “Science on the Move”. The exhibit will run at the Trace College until August 27, 2011 for a fee of P50 per student/visitor.

The opening day will culminate with a techno forum themed as “Nasa syensya ang pag-asa: Teknolohiya tungo sa magandang kinabukasan”. The forum is a knowledge-sharing activity on appropriate technologies among farmers, fisherfolks, businessmen, entrepreneurs, researchers, and other experts. It will be held at the UPLB ACCI Auditorium from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

On July 29, the LBSCFI R&D awarding ceremony will be held at the UP Open University Auditorium at 1:00 pm. At stake are the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. (PARRFI) R&D Award, F.O. Tesoro Technology Transfer Award, and Elvira O. Tan Memorial Award.

LBSCFI is one of four science communities established by the DOST in accordance with the Presidential Executive Order No. 784 in 1984. LBSCFI fosters the spirit of sharing of resources and expertise among its 24 member-agencies located in Los Baños.

The NSTW, on the other hand, was instituted by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 2214 in 1982. It was later amended through Republic Act 169 which set its annual celebration every third week of July.
