“Syensaya”, an annual activity of the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI), will be held from July 31 to August 2.
Carrying the theme “S&T toward a Smarter Science Community”, the event kicks off with an opening ceremony on July 31 at the Copeland Gym of the University of the Philippine Los Baños (UPLB), College, Laguna.
Invited to keynote the event is Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo.
After the ceremony, the “Wonderama” science exhibit opens to the public also at the Copeland Gymnasium. It will run from July 31 to August 2. Viewing time is from 9 am to 5 pm.
Wonderama is an interactive science-learning exhibit that caters to various audiences like students, teachers, farmers, and other interested groups. It is aimed at enhancing awareness about science and how science works for the improvement of the quality of life. Also featured are the programs and projects of the LBSCFI partner institutions.
Another highlight of the activity is the “Talakayan” techno forum, which will be held on August 2 from 1 pm to 5 pm at the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau Auditorium, Forestry Campus, UPLB.
The forum aims to increase the level of awareness of the target participants on selected topics; bring the science community closer to its beneficiaries; and sustain strong partnerships and collaboration among LBSCFI member agencies.
Capping the Syensaya is the LBSCFI R&D awarding ceremony, which will be held on August 2, 1 pm at the D.L. Umali Hall, also located at the UPLB Campus.
The award gives due recognition to excellent R&D projects conducted by member agencies of the Foundation. For its 2013 edition, the Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. will be awarded to an outstanding R&D work in the development category.
Incidentally, Syensaya is a banner program of LBSCFI in observance of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
LBSCFI is one of four science communities that DOST established in accordance with Presidential Executive Order no. 784 in 1984. LBSCFI fosters the spirit of sharing resources and expertise among its 22 member-agencies located in Los Baños.
The NSTW, on the other hand, was instituted by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 2214 in 1982. It was later amended through Republic Act 169, which sets its annual celebration every third week of July.
