Meeting on Karagomoi Production Manual Held

A group of experts from PCAARRD’s Forestry and Environment Research Division (FERD) proceeded to Legazpi City to finalize the preparation of the manual on Karagomoi and to photodocument its production particularly in Bacacay, Albay.

The FERD experts consist of Dr. Leila C. America, Dr. Nimfa K. Torreta, and Dr. Marcelino U. Siladan.  
Initial talks on the preparation of the manual took place at the office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Region V, Legazpi City with Foresters Alice Bermadas and Lida Borboran.

A field visit to Cagraray Island, Bacacay, Albay followed where karagomoi production was photodocumented and talks with the Committee involved in the preparation of the manual ensued.

The Committee reviewed the draft manual, inputted their comments and suggestions, and discussed plans and activities for karagomoi, among which is showcasing its gains during the 2015 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).      

Present during the meeting were representatives from PCAARRD, DENR Region V, Island Weavers Association, and Manaet-Tamagan Upland Farmers Association.

Mainly used for handicrafts by Albay folks, karagomoi or “pandan” in Tagalog, provides livelihood opportunities especially during tight times caused by natural calamities.

PCAARRD’s integrated R&D project for typhoon prone areas, initiated activities to tap the economic potentials of karagomoi particularly in assisting weavers who are primarily dependent on the said commodity.

The research and development activity on karagomai is one of the many projects of PCAARRD in keeping with the first and foremost of the outcomes committed by DOST: “Science based know-how and tools that enable the agriculture sector to raise productivity to world class standards.”
