Two papers and a poster from the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) funded project, “Creating an Enabling Environment for a Vibrant Philippine Bamboo Industry: Addressing Policy Constraints and Information Needs,” were presented during the 1st ASEAN Bamboo Congress.
Held at the Iloilo Convention Center (ICON) on August 12-16, 2019, the congress was organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB).
The theme of the event was, “Climate Change Adaptation Towards Environmental Sustainability and Economic Resiliency.” It was attended by local and foreign participants from the academe, research institutions, private sector, non-government organizations, government agencies, and other bamboo enthusiasts and practitioners.
Researchers from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (CFNR-UPLB) and their respective presentations were the following:
- “Addressing Policy Constraints for a Vibrant Philippine Bamboo Industry” by Dr. Priscila C. Dolom;
- “Benefit-cost Analysis of with and without Certificate of Verification Requirement for Harvesting Bamboo in Private Lands” by Dr. Vivian C. Daracan, and
- “Framework for an Appropriate IT-Supported Bamboo Data Collection and Dissemination System,” a poster presented by For. Noel L. Tolentino.
An open forum was conducted after the presentations, which was actively participated by the attendees of the congress.
Dr. Ramon A. Razal, project leader, served as plenary speaker. He discussed the paper, “Bamboo as a Valuable Resources for Inclusive Development and Economic Stability.”
Also held during the event was a signing of resolution developed to support and commit to the development of the bamboo industry in Region VI (Annette M. Tobias, DOST-PCAARRD Media Services).
