An inception meeting for four newly approved mussel and shrimp projects were conducted at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) in Iloilo recently.

Funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), the projects include:

  • Development of Philippine Penaeus vannamei broodstock selected for enhanced growth and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) resistance by Dr. Rex Ferdinand Traifalgar of UPV; and
  • Evaluation of native vinegars as growth promoter and immunostimulants in the Pacific White Shrimp by Dr. Augusto Serrano Jr. of UPV.

Dr. Dalisay DG. Fernandez, Director of the Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD), together with Dr. Adelaida T. Calpe, Industry Strategic Science and Technology (S&T) Program (ISP) manager for shrimp and Ms. Genevic Obrero, Mussel Research Assistant, conducted the inception meeting.

Among other concerns, issues such as implementation schedule, methodology, and expected outputs were discussed in the meeting.

The meeting also gave way for the presentation and evaluation of proposals to ensure that the projects will really contribute to the development of the aquaculture industry in the country.
