PCAARRD to feature R&D gains on biodiversity in 2019 National S&T Week

One of the Councils of the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) will be showcasing the outputs of its R&D on biodiversity during the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).

NSTW will be held from July 17 to 21, 2019 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

Following this year’s theme, “Enabling technologies for sustainable development,” DOST-PCAARRD will address United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) numbers 14 and 15 through showcasing technologies related to life below water and life on land under the Biodiversity and Sustainable Use of Biological Resources Cluster.

SDG #14 is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development while SDG #15 is to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.

Technologies featured under SDG #14 are R&D outputs on giant clams, sea cucumber, eel, knifefish control and management, sardines, mangrove rehabilitation, fishkill mitigation in Buhi Lake and Magat Dam reservoir, and coral reef management.

Meanwhile, technologies featured under SDG #15 are R&D outputs on indigenous vegetables; carrageenan plant growth promoter; citrus genetic resources information system; Nutrio biofertilizer for sugarcane; ACTICon biocontrol agent for Cavendish banana; native pig improvement and conservation; native duck improvement and conservation; textile fiber from sugarcane, abaca hybrids, and banana; flora and fauna assessment in key biodiversity areas; watershed monitoring system; conservation of ferns; use of natural fungicide against lettuce and tomato diseases; fruitbat conservation; and rubber and cacao sustainability assessment. It will also feature the livestock technology business incubation project; Carabao mango detection kit; genomics for crop improvement; varieties of banana; and genomics for mangrove crab and shrimp.

The Council will also host a forum on July 19, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Inland Aquatic Resources Research Division (IARRD) of the Council will be hosting the forum, “The Eel Fishery Tributaries along Lagonoy Gulf: Implications to Management and Conservation” from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 n.n.; while the Crops Research Division (CRD) will host the topic, “(Re) Discovering the Indigenous Vegetables in the Philippines” from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lastly, the Forestry and Environment Research Division (FERD) will host the topic, “Germplasm Conservation of Select Indigenous Forest Trees in Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve” from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

DOST-PCAARRD will share the Biodiversity and Sustainable Use of Biological Resources Cluster with the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), and Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI).
