PCARRD confers biennial awards on its 38th year

In celebration of its 38th year, PCARRD will recognize individuals and institutions that have played a major role in the development of the agriculture, forestry and natural resources (AFNR) sectors.

PCARRD’s commemoration of its founding year, aptly themed “Agham at teknolohiya sa agrikultura at likas na yaman:  Kabalikat sa pagbabago at pag-unlad”, will honor the contributions of its partners, the “movers and shakers” of AFNR S&T (science and technology), on November 10 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.

Foremost in its line-up of awards is the “Ugnay”. PCARRD confers the Ugnay Award to the outstanding regional R&D (research and development) consortium for its efforts in:addressing regional/national research and technology needs; and in hastening the realization of regional/national R&D thrusts and priorities through R&D planning, monitoring and evaluation; resource generation; and technology generation, promotion, and commercialization.

Next in the roster is the “Pantas”. Pantas, which means sage, wise men, or intellectual, is the award that acknowledges individual capacity to manage science and pursue research undertaking that requires intelligence, knowledge, and gut feel. One deserving researcher/scientist and one research administrator will be bestowed with the award.

“Tanglaw,” a Filipino word which means light, upholds research institutions or agencies that have contributed significantly to the progress of AFNR in the country. The award gives due recognition to institutional achievement that touches the lives of the people, and eventually helps the country keep a firmer hold on its economy.

Finally, the Council will bestow outstanding science communicators in print and broadcast media with the PCARRD Professional Media Award.

Aside from these awards, the National Symposium in Agriculture and Resources Research and Development or NSARRD will be conducted. NSARRD provides a venue for disseminating the most outstanding regional R&D outputs. This year, two entries will vie for the best paper award in the research category and another two will compete for the best paper in the development category.

Conferment of awards will be led by PCARRD Executive Director Patricio S. Faylon. Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Montejo will keynote the event.

Meanwhile, another highlight of the celebration is the showcase of regional S&T products. Alyansa ng mga Grupong Haligi ng Agham at Teknolohiya (AGHAM) Representative Angelo B. Palmones will open the exhibition.

PCARRD is DOST’s central coordinating body in the AFNR sectors. It is the first DOST Council that has received an ISO 2001:2008 certification and is a recent recipient of the  Philippine Quality Awards.
