Pickle making contest charms seaweed lovers

Members of the Women Association of Candijay, Bohol, participated in the Seaweed Pickle Making Contest in connection with the conduct of the Seaweed Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda (FIESTA).

FIESTA is a technology promotion and transfer platform initiated by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology.

Seaweed pickle making, like its many equivalent in the different FIESTAs sponsored by DOST-PCAARRD, explores value-adding initiatives as a means of increasing the demand for particular agricultural and aquatic commodity. As such, it provides options for business opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk and the country's micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Director Marita A. Carlos of the Applied Communication Division, PCAARRD; Ms. Lucy A. Lastimosa of the Technology Transfer and Promotion Division, PCAARRD; and Ms. Vilma Paller of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) served as the panel of judges.

The Seaweed FIESTA aims to help in transforming the seaweed industry into a sustainable enterprise and enhance the economic standing of seaweed farmers in Region 7.
