S&T-based interventions assist internally displaced population affected by the Taal volcano eruption

Communities affected by the Taal volcano eruption in 2020 were provided science and technology (S&T)-based assistance through the project, “Bangon Batangas: S&T-based Assistance to Taal Volcano’s Internally Displaced Population.” The project assessed the livelihood damages and aided internally displaced population (IDP) in Batangas due to the Taal volcano eruption in January 2020. The project is being implemented in the municipalities of Talisay, Laurel, Agoncillo, San Nicolas, and Balete.

The project is a cooperation between Batangas State University (BatStateU) and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

Damages in agriculture and aquatic sectors were assessed in the municipalities of Laurel, Agoncillo San Nicolas, and Balete through a focus group discussion (FGD) and site survey in Batangas. A total of 2,600 IDP families were assessed and profiled to help identify appropriate recovery interventions for the beneficiaries.

A benchmarking activity in Zambales and Albay was conducted to identify the best practices in disaster risk rehabilitation and restoration for disastrous volcanic eruptions. To address immediate needs of the victims, the project provided relief assistance to target beneficiaries through distribution of hygiene kits and food developed under DOST programs and projects such as complementary food blend, mongo-rice crunchies, and instant rice porridge.

Livelihood trainings on urban gardening and smoked bangus/tilapia as a source of extra income for the IPDs were also conducted to ensure food safety and security amidst calamities. Institutional collaborations were established among two state universities and colleges (SUCs) and four local government units (LGUs).

These outputs were reported during a virtual monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activity conducted on June 1, 2021. The activity was attended by the project team headed by Dr. Romel U. Briones.

This project is part of DOST-PCAARRD’s technology transfer initiatives, which mobilize partner agencies and institutions in providing much-needed assistance to communities in times of disaster and uncertainties. Generated technology-based outputs and resources are used and adapted to the current needs of its beneficiaries.
