Symposium on the sustainable use of Philippine native plants slated in 2017

The Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) will be holding a symposium and workshop on the Sustainable Use of Philippine Native Plants. One of the sponsors for the activity is the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

Tentatively scheduled in January 2017, the symposium aims to provide a venue for the exchange and sharing of information on the current development on Philippine native plants; document the best conservation practices and sustainable use of Philippine native plants; and explore opportunities to harness the economic benefits of plant resources.

The workshop expects to produce an initial list of economically important plant species; best practices on sustainable use and conservation for economically important plants; and produce recommendations for R&D towards developing technologies and approaches for sustainable use.

During the symposium, six papers will be presented, which will include the Introduction to Philippine Flora by Dr. Edwino Fernando; Policies/protocols on Philippine Plants by BMB; Wealth Creation Program by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR); Philippine Wild Plants in Commerce-Private Company; R&D on Plants (medicinal and ornamental)-PCAARRD and Known Economically Important Plant Resources and Their Uses by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI).
