Taking the wheel for a smarter South Luzon

Oro, S&T Media Service)TAGAYTAY CITY ― An event aimed to raise public awareness and understanding of S&T as well as to disseminate the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) role and contributions to national development was held recently at The Venue of Sky Ranch in this city.

The event, the 2013 South Luzon Cluster (SLC) S&T Fair and Exhibits, was spearheaded by DOST IV-A. The SLC is composed of DOST offices in the National Capital Region, Region III, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Region V.

Themed "Science, Technology, and Innovation: Drivers of Change for a Smarter South Luzon", the SLC promoted the use of technologies and social media to enable the government to become more efficient, transparent, and engaged.

Gracing the opening program were officials from DOST and the Cavite and Laguna local government units. Welcome messages were delivered by Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes D. Tolentino, DOST IV-A Regional Director Alexander R. Madrigal, and Cavite Provincial Administrator Efren Nazareno.

In an inspirational talk, Sta. Rosa City Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas said that Sta. Rosa is now a “Next Wave City”.

Next wave cities are cities which have utilized the six core areas of Smarter Philippines, namely: smarter government, smarter economy, smarter environment, smarter mobility, smarter living, and smarter people.

Oro, S&T Media Service)Another guest speaker, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice President for South Luzon Eduardo R. Nicolas III, emphasized the need to bring technology and introduce S&T solutions to the masses.

Keynoting the event was DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Carol M. Yorobe.

She emphasized on setting R&D trends, products, activities, and technologies. She also mentioned some of the undertakings and plans of the Department such as the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards or "Project  NOAH", the use of tablets in lieu of books, the promotion of micro- and small and medium enterprises, and provision of food and potable water to less fortunate communities.

Yorobe also said that to advocate and facilitate change, DOST conducts regional fairs and exhibits to reach more students and the common folk.

Aside from the fair and exhibits, ancillary activities such as a mobile application competition and a quiz contest on Information Communications Technology for high school and college students were also held.
