Webinar on sugarcane soon to be held

A Webinar on the recent outputs of research and development projects under the Sugarcane Industry R&D Program will be held on November 23, 2021, 1:30 PM live via Facebook Page of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

The webinar will highlight topics on the state of sugarcane industry in the Philippines, recommended varieties of sugarcane, Nutrio® biofertilizer, nanofertilizer, and autofurrow irrigation system.

Sugarcane is one of the most important products in the Philippines, which has contributed P70 billion in revenues to the country’s economy. The industry has to address the challenges and constraints that it is facing right now to recover and or maintain its significant contribution in the economy. Our speaker Atty. Ignacio Santillana of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) will set the tone to a further discussion on the topic.

SRA has developed several high-yielding sugarcane varieties that are currently being used in many sugarcane plantations. In this Webinar, Mr. Rimmon Armones of SRA-La Granja Agricultural Research and Extension Center will highlight climate resilient varieties that are adaptive to weather disturbances in the country.

Nutrio® biofertilizer will be presented by Dr. Virginia M. Padilla, former researcher of the University of the Philippines Los Baños-National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPLB-BIOTECH), now proprietress of Fullmight Agricultural Corp. This family-owned company now produces and sells Nutrio® biofertilizer. Nutrio® has been proven to increase sugarcane yield by as much as 39% and reduce nitrogen fertilizer input cost by 50%.

Fertigroe nanofertilizer is a slow-release fertilizer, which enables high nutrient uptake efficiency, giving the right amount of nutrients at a growth stage most needed by sugarcane plants. This is made possible by the application of nanotechnology in Fertigroe formulation. Mr. Quincy Ybañez of UPLB-College of Agriculture and Food Science will expound on how this nanofertilizer raised sugarcane yields in sugarcane farms where this was applied.

Lack of irrigation is one of the constraints in rainfed sugarcane farms in Luzon. Similarly, seasonal occurrence of prolonged dry spell in Visayas and Mindanao lowers yield and income. In this webinar, Dr. Armando Espino of the Central Luzon State University will introduce Auto Furrow Irrigation System (AFIS). After studying all types of irrigation systems, Dr. Espino found AFIS as a water-saving smart technology best for sugarcane production.
