SIPAG FIESTA: Pushing the Best of SIPAG from 2010-2016 through FIESTA

Even as we celebrate mileposts in our continuing journey towards an S&T-driven nation, I must repeat two fundamental notions that have always guided us:

One: It is only we, Filipinos, who must chart our own course. Because it is still only we, Filipinos, who must find solutions to our own problems and concerns.

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna - Secretary Mario G. Montejo of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) keynoted the first ever SIPAG FIESTA at the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) headquarters today.  

SIPAG FIESTA highlights the best of DOST-PCAARRD’s research and development (R&D) initiatives from 2010 to 2016.   

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) formally kicked off its SIPAG FIESTA to showcase the best of the Council’s  agri-aqua research and development (R&D) outputs generated from 2010 to 2016. 

SIPAG FIESTA, which is scheduled until March 4, Friday, is being held at the DOST-PCAARRD complex in Los Baños, Laguna. 

 

Secretary Mario G. Montejo joins  the boodle fight, which highlights the third and final day of the PCAARRD SIPAG FIESTA. The Secretary shared the hearty meal with farmers, fisherfolk, researchers, scientists,  regional research and development consortium officials and staff, students and teachers, in what is dubbed as PCAARRD Syensya Lauriat, symbolic of the research and development gains of DOST-PCAARRD and its partners.

Senator Cynthia A. Villar, Senate Chairperson on Agriculture and Food, lauded the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST-PCAARRD) SIPAG FIESTA as a vital science and technology diffusion strategy, which could impact on the lives of the country’s 11.8 million agricultural workers.

Monitoring and evaluation are integral tools for managing and assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of research and development investments.

Guided by this concern, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), monitored the status of six projects at the Visayas State University (VSU).

The forum, which was part of the three-day SIPAG FIESTA, was spearheaded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

Showcasing the best of the Council’s R&D initiatives from 2010 to 2016, SIPAG FIESTA provided a technology forum where important outputs on crops, livestock, aquatic, forestry, natural resources were tackled.  

A sweetpotato festival, dubbed “Sweetpotato FIESTA,” was held in Camiling, Tarlac, recently.

FIESTA stands for Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science Technology Agenda. This is one of the initiatives of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). Particularly, it is a technology diffusion strategy, which uses events to enhance agri-aqua technology transfer and commercialization.

Swine nutrition specialist Ronilo de Castro of the Livestock Research Division of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) was selected as the first Filipino doctorate scholar of the Nagoya University Asian Satellite Campus (NUASC) for its Transnational PhD Program. From an average production of 5.1 metric tons of sweetpotato per hectare in 2012, the Philippines is to increase production to 20 metric tons per hectare in 2016, about four times of the country’s usual produce.
