A study on the use of indigenous plants as biopesticides for vegetable diseases was recognized recently in the National Symposium on Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NSAARRD).

The study titled, “Screening indigenous plants as biopesticides and product development for vegetable diseases” received 1st place with a cash prize of ₱150,000 in the Best R&D Paper Awards, Research Category. The study was implemented by Victor B. Amoroso, Florfe M. Acma, Cecilia V.

Two researches on the potential immunostimulant for giant tiger shrimp and a tool to determine the impacts of climate change in fisheries claimed the top prize in the Dr. Elvira O. Tan Awards, aquatic science and natural resources and environment categories. 

The research titled, “A Probiotic Bacillus Strain Containing Amorphous Poly-beta Hydroxybutyrate (PHB) Stimulates the Innate Immune Response of Penaeus monodon Postlarvae” won the top prize and a cash prize of P100,000 in the Dr. Elvira O.

After a year of implementation, the Graduate Research and Education Assistantship for Technology otherwise known as GREAT Program has produced its first three graduates. They are Renerio P. Gentallan, Jr., Jayson O. Fumera, and Yaminah Mochica M. Pinca, who all graduated from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

MUSUAN, Bukidnon—Maaring mapagkuhanan ng ‘biopesticide’ ang mga katutubong halaman ayon sa isang pag-aaral 

Pinangunahan ang pag-aaral ng mga mananaliksik ng Central Mindanao University kasama ang isang Balik Scientist ng Department of Science and Technology.    

Sampung uri ng halaman ang sinuri sa pag-aaral upang tukuyin ang taglay nilang ‘phytochemicals’ sa paraang in vivo at in vitro laban sa dalawang organismong nagdudulot ng sakit, ang Alternaria brassicae at Phytophtra infestans.

Isang proyekto na pinondohan ng Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) ang nakatulong upang mapabuti ang mga kambingan at mapalawak ang kaalaman sa pag-aalaga ng kambing gamit ang mga paraan na ginagamit ang siyensiya. Ang proyektong ito ay may titulong “Farm-based promotion of alternative management options and farm recording.”

INDANG, Cavite – Nagsagawa ng isang pag-aaral ang mga mananaliksik ng Cavite State University (CvSU) para sa pangangalaga at pangangasiwa ng genetic resources ng kape (Coffea spp.) sa bansa. Ito ay upang tugunan ang tuloy-tuloy na pagkawala ng maraming mahahalagang hene ng kape.   

Kumalap ang mga mananaliksik ng animnapu’t siyam (69) na ‘accession’ na nabibilang  sa apat na mahahalagang  uri ng kape. Binubuo ito ng 28 accessions ng C. Arabica, 15 ng C. liberica, 9 ng C. excelsa at 17 ng C.

Naitala sa halos ‘zero’ ang produksyon ng soybean o utaw sa Cagayan Valley noong 2010. Iniugnay ito sa isyu na may kinalaman sa pagbebenta at pag-gamit sa nasabing produkto.  Upang buhayin ang produksyon ng utaw Sa Cagayan Valley, inilunsad ang programang Enhancing Soybean Productivity and Local Availability in Region 2 noong 2011.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña was recently conferred with Doctor of Laws honoris causa by the University of the Philippines (UP) during the 21st Commencement Exercises of UP Mindanao

The degree was conferred upon de la Peña to honor his contributions to UP where he served as Director for the UP Institute for Small Scale Industries (1992-2001) and Vice President for Planning and Development for the entire UP System (1993-1999).

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Western Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESMAARRDEC) held a two-day Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda (FIESTA) on July 10-11, 2018 to promote ZamPen Native Chicken and other technologies. The FIESTA is held at the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).
