LUCBAN, Quezon – To meet the high demand for quality planting materials of the wood-based industry, ensuring the supply of our forest tree resources is a must. 

To achieve this, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) funded a project in support of the National Greening Program. 

Two projects implemented by the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) found that duhat (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) and bignay (Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng) contain anthocyanins that possess health-promoting properties, particularly antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties. Because of these properties, the two extracts can be processed as feed supplement and food additive. They also have nutraceutical properties.

Nakita sa dalawang proyekto na isinagawa ng University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) na ang duhat (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) at bignay (Antidesma bunius (L.) Spreng) ay may mga katangian na nakapagpapabuti ng kalusugan. Ang mga nasabing prutas ay may taglay na anthocyanins na mayroong ‘antioxidant’ at ‘enzyme inhibitory properties.’ Dahil dito, maaaring gamitin ang katas ng duhat at bignay bilang ‘food supplement,’ ‘food additive’ at ‘nutraceutical.’
