The Forestry and Environment Research Division (FERD) of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) recently visited the Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve and the National Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Green mussel (Perna viridis), locally known as tahong, is the only species of mussel being cultured commercially in the Philippines. A challenge that hinders sustainability of mussel production is the insufficient supply of seed stock. Mussel farmers rely mainly on seeds gathered from the wild. However, due to the impacts of natural and human influences, mussel spats from the natural bed are now becoming scarce and could hardly support the requirement of the growers.

Green mussel (Perna viridis) is an important fishery resource in the Indo-Pacific region. Considering its importance, the grow-out aquaculture for this commodity has already been developed. However, the production of mussel still remains very low which only comprises 0.9% of the total aquaculture production of the country. To ensure increased production, mussel spats should be transported efficiently to guarantee better survival rate.

A project funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) has identified 14 locations measuring a total of 6,283.30 hectares as potential sites for mussel culture. This was a result of a project that aimed to increase mussel production through identifying potential sites for mussel culture in the country.

Although technologies and innovations have long promised advancement and development in the AANR sector, technology transfer and adoption continue to be a challenge. This was the challenge that was addressed in a message by Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, Acting Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) during the 12th Global Technology and Information Search Seminar.

Pinahintulutan kamakailan ng Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) ang pagsasagawa ng isang pag-aaral na may kinalaman sa paggamit ng likas na ‘fungicide,’ partikular para sa litsugas at kamatis.

Ang proyekto ay may titulong “Field Verification of Natural Fungicide from Tasmannia piperita (Hook. F.) Miers against Alternaria brassicae of Lettuce and Phytophtora infestans of Tomato.”

Researchers from six implementing state universities and colleges (SUCs) and agencies recently gathered at the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) to discuss and assess the status and accomplishments of the “National Research and Development Project on Watershed Management in the Philippines (Phase 2).”

A niche tourism brand for students, budding scientists, or even armchair Einsteins is currently in the works in Los Baños.

Through the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. (LBSCFI), the “Development of Science Tourism in Los Baños” project was launched through the signing of a memorandum of agreement with the CALABARZON branches of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Education (DepED).
