To address the degradation and ensure the sustainability of the country’s watersheds, six watersheds located all over the country were assigned as Learning Watersheds.

Titled, National Research and Development Project for Watershed Management in the Philippines (NRDPWMP), the project is funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the total swine inventory totaled 12.48 million head in 2016, 3.98% higher compared in 2015. Likewise, stocks in backyard farms and commercial farms increased by 2.27% and 7.15%, respectively. With the increase in inventory and production, there is a need to ensure food safety and quality of pork produced.

The Philippines’ strategic location and favorable soil and climatic conditions make the country suitable for planting cacao. The current estimate of cacao produced in the country is 12,000 metric tons (MT). Two projects on the protection of the integrity of the ecosystem funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) formally kicked off recently.

Implemented under the Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR) Program, the projects aim to develop a detailed map of the Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve and provide recommendations for the sustainable management of Laguna de Bay.

More than 50 officers and researchers from 10 state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country recently participated in a training workshop. Spearheaded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), the workshop aimed to help the Council’s regional partners to pursue their technology business incubators (TBIs).

Sa Pilipinas, ang kopra ay isang mahalagang pinagkukuhanan ng pakain para sa hayop. Noong 2014, nakapag prodyus ang bansa ng 750,000 metriko tonelada ng kopra mula sa niyog. Ang 60% nito ay ginamit bilang pakain sa hayop. 

Tulad ng ‘soybean’, ang kopra ay inuuri bilang protina na nagmula sa halaman at maaaring ihalo sa pakain ng hayop. Ayon sa datos noong taong 2012, ang Pilipinas ay umaangkat ng soybean meal sa halagang 500 milyong dolyar bawat taon.
