To address the degradation and ensure the sustainability of the country’s watersheds, six watersheds located all over the country were assigned as Learning Watersheds.

Titled, National Research and Development Project for Watershed Management in the Philippines (NRDPWMP), the project is funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the total swine inventory totaled 12.48 million head in 2016, 3.98% higher compared in 2015. Likewise, stocks in backyard farms and commercial farms increased by 2.27% and 7.15%, respectively. With the increase in inventory and production, there is a need to ensure food safety and quality of pork produced.

Two projects on the protection of the integrity of the ecosystem funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) formally kicked off recently.

Implemented under the Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR) Program, the projects aim to develop a detailed map of the Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve and provide recommendations for the sustainable management of Laguna de Bay.

More than 50 officers and researchers from 10 state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country recently participated in a training workshop.
